It has been known that 1950s is the classic age of American automobiles, when two-tone paint and fins rule the highways and showrooms of the country. The popularity of American automobiles has been shown that there is an increasing demand in American market for luxury interiors, smooth rides, high-performance engines and cool looks.

It has been shown that Ford Thunderbird Edsel is produced by Ford Motor Company and it is a medium or mid-priced model in American field during that period. The Edsel is invested by Ford by $300 million for the market. Even though the car is not as popular as expected in the American market, it is still very meaning for in the history of American automobile market. It should be acknowledged that $ 300 million is equivalent to about $ billion dollars in today's currency. The Ford Thunderbird Edsel in 1958 has 352 cubic inch V-8 engine and continued in use until 1967. 
 
To goal to introduce Edsel by the Ford Motor Company is to take more market share in the American automobiles market in order to compete with General motors and Chrysler. However, after the launch of Edsel by the Ford Motor Company in the American market, it has been shown that the Edsel has never gained popularity in the market and the sales of Edsel are very poor (Tom, D., 2010). 
 
When Edsel launches in the market, Ford Motor Company has used poster to advertise their new automobiles. From the advertisement of Edsel, it has been indicated that 'Its elegance, its engines, its exciting new features, make other cars seem ordinary'. In the posters, it has been shown that it uses the comic way to demonstrate the new design of the vehicles for consumers. 
 
The poster 'More new ideas, more YOU ideas - in the Ford family of fine cars' is an object of communication through the colored printed poster with illustration, comic and more. Each section in the poster is carefully styled and designed carefully in order to attract attention from potential consumers. There are two posters for Edsel by the Ford Motor Company have been used for this assignment in order to demonstrate the denotative and connotative meaning.

Denotative Description Connotative Readings
A bold, large print, 1 line description for introducing the new Thunderbird Edsel in the American automobile market for potential customers. The 1 line print word is on the top of the poster 'more new ideas, more YOU ideas - in THE FORD FAMILY OF FINE CARS'.   It has been indicated that the 1 line description for introducing the new Thunderbird Edsel in the American automobile market for potential customers have demonstrated a humanistic care for them. The word 'YOU' in the 1 line description has included a human stand upright in the character 'O'. The fact is that the1 line description carries the humanistic caring for their potential consumers and readers for the posters. More importantly, the red bold of the word 'YOU' has made it attractive and emphasized in the poster. It is contrast with the light color of the poster. 
In the right corner of the poster, it has been shown that there is a section for describing the characteristics of the Edsel. The description is printed by black words. It provides the general idea for the new designed wagons for families. The fact is that the description has emphasized on the idea families. Whenever people think of families, they will imagine an image with a lot of family members. As a result, there is idea of that more people would need to more room to stay together. The big, beautiful and versatile car by the Ford Motor Company would satisfy the need of any families. 
It has been shown that in the poster that the color of the background is very light compare to the Ford Thunderbird Edsel. The color for the Edsel cars in the poster is very bright and colorful. The fact is that the bright color of the Edsel cars by the Ford Motor Company is very attractive. It has been shown that the colors of the cars are right, blue and other bright colors. It should be acknowledged that red is the color which stands for enthusiasm and energetic while blue stands for calm and cold. The combination of red and blue has been demonstrated the visual simulation for readers for the poster. 
When you take a close look at the poster, you can find that the red Ford car on the right up corner in the poster is very attractive as it is red and very bright in this poster. It has been shown that it is a Ford Beach Wagon. And the car is parking alongside of the river. The reason why the red car is parking alongside of the river can be easily understood by the name of the car, Ford Beach Wagon. It has been shown that this is a car for families to hang out together to enjoy the leisure of playing near the beach. More importantly, it has been shown that there are 5 family members near the trunk of the red ford wagon. Additionally, the beach table and chairs have been set up and parents are still passing items from the trunk to set up their leisure playing area on the beach. As a result, it has indicated that the Ford Beach Wagon is a very useful and good car for family to go out for a small trip as the room of the trunk is large enough to contain food, drink, table, chairs and etc. More importantly, the car can still easily drive all family members without any problems. Such a good wagon should be owned by every family for their trip as well as for their daily life. 
The car on the right up corner which is dark green is parking near the river. Two men deliver the boat from the trunk and there is a easy set up green colored house on the top of the car as well with a ladder lay on the car. The light green house on top of the dark green car has made the car outstanding and attractive in the poster. Light green gives people a feeling of full of vigor and make the situation become more vivid. Moreover, it has been indicated that the car is very stable and the top of the car is very flat as it can suggest the easy set up house on top of it along with a ladder lay on it. Also, it is a car which is strong and long enough to carry a boat as well. As a result, it has been shown from this section of the poster that it is a great car for family use in order to enjoy their trip. 
On the left corner of the poster, there is a gray car stop near a restaurant with a party ongoing. The elegant lady is waiting for the servant to open the door for her to get out of the car. The gray Ford car is driven by a driver which has indicated that the car can be used for showing social status. Moreover, gray is a color which stands for hoping and elegant. More importantly, the dress of the servant is very formal and luxury, it has indicated that the party is very formal and it could be for the upper class people. This means that the Fold Edsel is a great choice for consumers to choose as a car to shown their social status and for social activities in order to gain respects from other people.

The red spot car is on the center of the poster. It has been shown that it is a open car with a male and female on it. And there is a man stand in front of the red sport open car. Red is a color stands for enthusiasm and energy. It is very attractive in the poster. It has been indicated that sport open car is very attractive and easily to be noticed by consumers. Moreover, there is a male and a female sitting in the car and discussing something happily. It gives a impression for readers that the car is a good choice for them to show off in front of their girlfriend and it is a great choice to own a sport car like this. Added to this, this meaning has been emphasized by the man standing in front of the red sport open car that the car is very attractive for people who pass through the car. 
The background of the poster is blue and it includes the word ‘YOU’ in it as well. The color blue gives people a feeling of calm and peace. It has been shown that the background of the poster has made a contrast with the bright color of the cars. It has been indicated that the color of the background is good for emphasizing the main characters, the Ford Edsel cars for viewers. 
Moreover, the word ‘YOU’ in the background of the poster has indicated that optimum goal of the new Ford cars is for ‘people’ as it includes a stand person in the character ‘O’. The humanistic caring of the new designed Ford cars have been demonstrated successfully for their potential consumers and readers for the posters
There is car on the left of the poster near the red sport open car. It is a light yellow car. In fact, yellow is a color which shows sunny, hope and and lively. The color of the car is very vivid and very attractive for young people. Moreover, the design of the car is also very fashionable and attractive as well. It nears the red sport open car means that it is a good alternative choice for consumers to choose as a sport car if they do not like a open car. It is very good to contrast the two sport cars by putting them together in the poster.
