1. Janet Shibamoto Smith writes, in “Changing Lovestyles: Fictional Representations of Contemporary Japanese Men in Love,” that “Whether fantasy or guideline for real life choices, however, it is clear that these texts track a change in the grammar of love from a man whose needs align straightforwardly with the social need for fully mature men to be
married in the direction of a more emotional, embodied man whose needs are very much his
own” (p. 382). This change suggests that fictional portrayals of men play with and challenge stereotypes of men as emotionless or unable to express themselves. Together with this idea is the idea that representations of women change, too, becoming stronger and more self-assured.
Bring these ideas together in the film Josée, the Tiger, and the Fish, to argue how this film presents specific gender ideas about its main characters. How does Tsuneo grow as an ‘emotional man’, and how does Josée develop as a ‘strong woman’?
2. Kevin Johnson, in “Unrealistic Portrayals of Sex, Love, and Romance in Popular Wedding Films,” has adapted a list of twelve myths about love. We’ve looked at a few of these—there will be one perfect love waiting for a character; perfect lovers are predestined to meet; etc.
Choose one Asian love story (either comedy or tragedy, i.e., a happy ending or a sad one), and demonstrate how it accepts or rejects some of these myths about love. Suggest why the film either accepts or rejects these myths. You may use one of the films from the course, or another that you’re familiar with.
