In the article Nationalism and Reform in Australian Architecture, (Hamann 1979)we have learned the process and influence of nationalism and reform in Australian architecture during 1880 and 1920 which has altered the feeling about the place of foreign architecture drastically. The commentators in early 1860s had urged that the Australia’s foreign architecture styles simply be altered to accommodate climate, which indicated a growing trend of anti-British feeling. In this trend, Mediterranean, North Arica and Asia styles have been considered as ancestors of modern architecture, ensuring the new Australian architecture was linked to reform in the 1860s.

Instead of discussing ‘the nearest thing to a regional style’, Saunders refers to the phenomenon that Sydney have a lively architectural theme or style as ‘the backward looking avant-garde, relating ‘the Sydney School’ to overseas styles.
In 1973 discussion, Cox hinted at an evolutionary or developmental view of ‘the Sydney School’, then Jennifer Taylor dealt with the question of development and distinctiveness of ‘the Sydney School’ which raised by Cox.
With questions and other issues remain to be answered by future studies, it was an interesting notion probably because the writers involved in discussion were searching for an aesthetically pleasing Australian architecture.
