Your example should be carefully selected. You could either choose one from those listed in the Study Guide (childrearing,technology, politics of child rights) or you could choose one from other another aspect of children’s growth and development. Any definitions of society, culture, socio-culturalism or the theoretical perspectives should be brief.
Socio-cultural theoretical perspectives covered in the course content (socio-cultural theory, ecological systems theory, critical constructivist theory, postmodern and poststructural theory, and/or a Maori perspective on human development) should be used as the theoretical tool via which you conduct your critical analysis. The theoretical perspectives themselves should not be the focus of the essay.
Your critical analysis should:
Focus on ONE example.
It should be structured so as to demonstrate how the selected example influences the growth and development of children.
Demonstrate how each aspect is caused or influenced by society, or a product of the culture children live in.
Use the theoretical perspective/s (as outlined above) to analyse these factors and the key aspects
1. Analysis demonstrates an understanding of socio-cultural perspective(s) of human development.
2. Analysis refers to current literature.
3. The scope of the assessment question is addressed.

1.Please clearly state in your introduction what aspects of child-rearing practice you are going to analyse in the essay. Your analysis throughout the essay needs to focus on these aspects, NOT on all the concepts of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological system theory. You just need to use relevant concepts of the theory as reference to support your analysis.
2.You can focus on feeding, playing and discipline (or behaviour management) as aspects of childrearing practice. You need to analyse how society and culture influence these aspects and how these aspects affect children's growth and development. A range of relevant literature and evidence/examples with full and correct references should be used to support your analysis. Again, Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory should be support your analysis as a reference or a tool. Do not focus on analysing the theory.
