Assignment 1 brief.
Assessment 1: 60%
Students must produce a 3,000 word comparative international study of economic structures and patterns of journalism
What’s expected?
A comparative international study of the economic patterns and structures of journalism will necessarily reference the difference in approaches to funding ‘journalism’ in a global context.
Here are some general pointers to get your thoughts on track
• By this point in the module you’ll be aware that ‘journalism’ is a ‘product’ (with a use and exchange value).
• You’ll be aware that it’s one part of a ‘dual product’
• You’ll recognise the difference between say commercially funded TV and Public service TV
• Your study will have to take onboard the different forms of media (print, TV, Radio and online)
• Remember - most media products are owned by large conglomerates. In some countries large companies might produce News at a loss in order to win the legal right to broadcast other content – say entertainment.
• For many, newspaper production is just one component of a companies offering.
• Some may fund newspapers entirely from the cover price – most probably http://www.ukassignment.org/ fund production through advertising.
Can I do a case study?
If you choose a large enough ‘conglomerate’ a case study will be fine. Many of these companies will be operating in more than one territory/country and their media offerings will consequently be subject to say - different legislation, different market conditions and consumer expectations etc.
Remember – it’s a COMPARATIVE study so a case study examining only one product in one territory won’t offer a comparison. But a case study looking at 2 or 3 products from one company trading globally possibly will.
What form should the assessment take?
The study should be written up in essay form properly referenced using the Harvard system.
