ASSIGNMENT QUESTION
You are the chief trade negotiator of your country (you can pick any country that is a WTO member). Currently, the WTO is involved in a round of trade negotiations. You are required to prepare a policy paper on agriculture for your trade minister who will represent your country at the next WTO mini-ministerial meeting.
Your paper should focus on one of the following:
a. market access
b. domestic support
c. export subsidies
The policy paper should outline your country’s negotiating position on one of the above areas in the agricultural negotiations. More specifically, you need to
• clearly explain how the rules of the AoA in one of the above areas affect your country by providing clear examples
• outline a policy proposal which argues for specific changes to the AoA rules to safeguard the welfare of your country (given the issues you discuss in the dot point above)
Make sure that you answer the question and do not get stuck describing the AoA. The main body of the essay should focus on (a) the implications of the rules of the AoA for your country and (b) on your particular policy proposal. Remember, the negotiations which have been ongoing since 2000 have a long history. Demonstration of some knowledge of this history is important; however, do make sure you remain focused on developing your policy position.
PLEASE DO NOT PARAPHRASE OR PLAIGIARISE ORIGINAL POLICY POSITIONS OF ANY GIVEN COUNTRY. This is a creative exercise.

• An understanding of the dynamics of the Doha round of negotiations on agriculture, particularly issues of contention
• A demonstrated understanding of the implications of the AoA in a particular country setting

You can use one or two diagrams, put given the short word-length, the uses of diagrams should be limited.
