MSc – HRM DISSERTATION WORKSHOP GUIDANCE - ETHICAL APPROVAL FORM

 All students of Cardiff University are required to complete an Ethical Approval Form whereby you consider the ethical implications of your research prior to conducting your research (if your research is assignment格式 based on human participants). YOU MUST NOT CONDUCT ANY RESEARCH WITHOUT ADVANCE APPROVAL.

 The form is completed by the student – approved and signed by the supervisor and then sent to the secretary of the CARBS Research Ethics Committee – Ms. Laine Clayton (F09) to be stamped.

 The stamped page of the Ethical Approval Form has to be included and bound into the dissertation. It is to be inserted in the dissertation on the page after the student declaration.

 The sample of the consent form with an example of one which is signed is to be included in the appendix.

 The deadline for submission for ethical approval is July 16th 2010.

IMPORTANT FEATURES TO NOTE

 For more information and guidance including a sample of a completed Masters form -
refer to the ethics website www.cf.ac.uk/carbs/research/ethics.html

 Download a copy of the ethics form and the consent form from the website and save it as a word document. The consent form must to tailored to your own research project.

 To complete the form you will need to outline an over-view of the themes and questions you intend to ask are if you are conducting qualitative interviews, and the questionnaire you intend to distribute if http://www.ukassignment.org/   you are adopting a survey design. Therefore, it is suggested that the ethics form should be completed when exams have concluded in mid June when you have time to consider your research dissertation.

ADVICE ON HOW TO COMPLETE THE FORM

Fill in your personal details as instructed on the form.

State the aims and objectives of the dissertation: Identify your main research aims - these can be listed on the form - This has already been undertaken in the research proposal assignment.

Methodology to be Applied: Identify your use of methods – qualitative and/or quantitative – detailing whether you are using a questionnaire, observation or interviews or a combination of these.

1) Participants in the research: Identify the research sample e.g. interviews with 20 employees or a questionnaire survey of 100 clerical workers and interviews with 3 HRM managers.

2) Consent and Participant Information Arrangements: This issue is covered by the completion of the consent form.
Interviews - You will be provided with an outline of consent form which asks participants to consent to taking part in the interview which they then sign. You will need to customize this form for your own particular study as you may want to omit some elements such as providing respondents with feed-back. #p#分页标题#e#
Questionnaire – It is advised that you include a section at the introduction of the questionnaire which identifies that completing the questionnaire is voluntary and if participants do not feel comfortable with completing any section they can omit this.

3) Ethical Issues Raised by Research
I would advise that you write a short paragraph which details the ethical issues raised by your research under the following 3 headings. For more information refer to the lecture hand-out on Ethics and see the BSA Code of Ethics provided.

a) Consent
The main issue here is one of informed consent.
Interviews
Most of these issues will be resolved by the written consent form but additionally you may want to also consider the following points:-
• Clarify to the gatekeeper that participation in the research has to be voluntary and that each and every respondent taking part in the research has the ability to withdraw at any time.
• You could also ask to contact every participant individually to seek their consent e.g. via e-mail. You may also want to communicate the research with trade unions in the organization and also ask them to inform their members.
• It may be possible to ‘advertise’ for respondents to volunteer to take part in the research project via the company intranet or the company newsletter etc.

Observation
• Identify that ethical consent for observation can be problematic to achieve and therefore you will strive to inform respondents in the organization of what you are there to do.
• Ideas - use the intranet or newsletter, trade union or works council etc. to inform organizational members of what you are there to observe and what the research is about.

Questionnaire
In the introduction to the questionnaire you should be explicit about what the research is for – MSc dissertation, what the research objectives are – what is the topic about, whether you are providing feed-back to the organization about the results. Then clarify to the respondent that taking part in the study is voluntary and that if they feel uncomfortable in completing any questions detailed they should not complete these.

b) Deception and Harm
• Be clear about the research aims and what the research will be used for - for example, I would suggest printing an A4 sheet which identifies your name and degree to be achieved and the institution and the broad objectives of the research.
• Clarify to respondents if you are providing feed-back to the organization and the form this will take.
• Clarify to respondents that you will not provide information which will risk or harm them in anyway.

c) Privacy and Confidentiality
• Safeguards are put in place to protect the privacy and identity of research subjects. These normally involve assurances of confidentiality - so for people, locations and organization we use pseudonyms. These must be used at all times. #p#分页标题#e#
• Clarify that on all transcriptions of interviews no real names of individuals or, of the organization will ever be documented.
• Assure people that we will not identify the positions of individuals if they are likely to be easily identified or specific features about their lives.
• Questionnaire respondents can not be identified.

Additional Ethical Issues to Consider:

The Nature of Access
• Clarify that access is an on-going process in organizational research and so you are aware that you will re-negotiate access and therefore gain consent from every individual participant.
• Clarify that if you are seeking to interview staff members in different departments within the organization then it is customary to seek permission from the manager directly even if they are not taking part in the research.
• If you have negotiated access with an ‘insider’ – think about how you will disclose this to respondents. You may find that you have to be more careful of assuring anonymity and confidentiality and how the data is to be used if you are achieving access as an insider – assure respondents and your relative or friend that you will not discuss the views of individual respondents.

Providing Feed-Back to the Organization
• Be clear to the organization about the form the feed-back will take – Is it a written report, an oral discussion with the HR manager? If it is a written form explain to the manager that there will be no direct quotes because of assurances of confidentiality to participants and it will not be possible to identify individual views.
• Clarify who the feedback will be disseminated to – in the case of interviews, individual respondents may also request a summary report.
• Be clear to the participants when you intend to provide feed-back to the organization – clarify what form this will take and how you intend to anonymize individuals, not provide direct quotes or job titles or document private details about their personal lives.
• Have you agreed for respondents to see the summary report before you disseminate it?
• Be aware of issues of harm – think carefully before providing feed-back about whether your findings will directly harm respondents e.g. workers generally leave work 10 minutes early, staff go to the toilet to talk to their friends, reporting the nick-names workers call managers etc.

Finally – you are required to include the questionnaire you intend to use and an outline of the themes you intend to address for interviews with respondents. Please note that it is accepted that these may be subject to changes and refinements.
