Reflective report that outlines how your transferable skills have shaped your performance in Lakeside

1. Introduction

In today's competitive job market with many employment opportunities, only to master one or two professional knowledge and skills cannot guarantee people to find a suitable or satisfactory job, most employers’ employment standards are no longer limited to the professional knowledge and skills, but consider the overall http://www.ukassignment.org/ygkczy/ quality of talent (Bridges, 2006). Transferable skill is recognized and valued in such a context.

2. Relevant concept

Transferable skill refers to the acquired skills and abilities by means of various life activities (including work, study, hobbies, sports and other activities), these potentials may be useful for the work to be done, and can be transferred to work (Jenkins, Rust and Gibbs, 1994). At present, the recognized four major transferable skills are: 1) communication and presentation skills (oral, written and graphic); 2) teamwork and interpersonal skills; 3) organizational management and planning capacity; 4) thinking ability and creativity.
Transferable skills can be effective to apply some kind of professional knowledge and skills into a variety of specific work, can also migrate previous work experience to the new work. Therefore, this ability is valued by employers. And for the people with replacement work for the first time looking for work (for example, university graduates), the transferable skills may be particularly important. For college graduates, they are difficult to find and complete their professional counterparts in the work; and replacement job seekers are also difficult to find and work exactly the same job before (Drummond, Nixon and Wiltshire, 1998). At this time, if not to be aware of its transferable skills, or cannot cover letter or interview to convey the skills employers need, it is easy to lose the opportunity. Therefore, the assessment for their potential for a variety of skills is important, but how in the cover letter and interview to convey the transferable skills a company needs can also become a matter of concern.

3. Transferable skills shaped in Lakeside

As a college student majored in Hotel Management with strong operational skills, internship plays an important role to interns, schools and businesses. In this report, I will take my internship in Lakeside Restaurant as an example to talk about how the transferable skills have shaped my performance.
During the period of internship in Lakeside Restaurant, I have a total of seven positions, including waitress, host, runner and marketer, ahl waitress, chef manager, chef and main course chef.
3.1 Communication
Communication is a two-way process, and language communication is the most common form. Personally, I think: first learn to listen, and then learn to speak. Listening is to clarify what the central meaning expressed by others is. If the other party’s expression is not clear, in the process of listening may be appropriate to request clarification, only fully listen carefully, the suggestions or comments prepared for their own may be right. Speaking with the experience of listening requires in the shortest possible time to express their ideas clearly.
When I was served as a waitress, I met some challenges during this operation training. One is the poor vocabulary. When the customer orders drink and food, I cannot write down integrally, I just can write some simple food names such as coca, juices, pork and steak, and when the customers read about white and red wine, I even cannot understand what it is. I felt this seriously affected the customers’ mood. I found some solutions to solve these problems. One of the methods is the use of abbreviations. I have to find easy and fast way to record, and therefore I should read the menu at free time and find the special words for record such as “Home cured Ham and Bressola Beef”. I just write down ham and beef, for white and red wine I just need to write the number of menu given.

3.2 Teamwork
Team is the positive synergistic effect through the joint efforts of its members, the result of efforts of their team members makes the team's performance level is greater than the sum of the performance of individual members. When the work is around the group rather than individuals to design, it forms a work team.
When I served as a chef manager, due to lack of some knowledge on a lot of kitchen tools and vegetables, I was difficult to find some tools what chefs need, because there are too much similar but not the same tools and I do not know the name of the tools. Another problem is difficult to understand the use of some materials. Therefore, as my personal reasons, progress of the work makes the whole kitchen is not very well, because there is no highlight of the strength of the team. These problems need to be resolved, I consider I should need to do more reading about kitchen appliances or kitchen is equipped with tools in the library.

3.3 Organizational management and planning capacity
In the prerequisites for the group organizer, the most urgent need is the ability to listen well and good integration of the views of all members. Even the ability to work is not very good, or clumsy words, but if to be a good listener, and consolidating views of people set goals, is also a good organization and leadership talent.
When I served as a main course chef, I did a lot of work and learned too many cooking skills. However, due to my bad memory, especially busy, I need the repeated recall in the end of the course and then know what they can remember. Therefore, it seriously limits my organizational management and planning capacity in the team.

3.4 Thinking ability and creativity
Creative thinking skills refer to the creative awareness and innovation of thinking activities (Atlay and Harris, 2010). They are not rigid, singular, change, expressed as questions and creatively solve problems creatively.
When I served as a host, I learned a few tricks, for example write down the not booking table number and seat number can not only easy to help customers find seats but also reduce the possibility of guiding errors. In addition, I learned using bottle opener to open red and white wine. I learned waitress must show the wine's name and age to customer, and provide a little wine for customer to try the wine, after customers determine and pour half wine for others whom want to drink, and the ladies first pay attention to one thing.

Through the internship in Lakeside Restaurant, I understood that the key for the results of the internship is not to adjust the positions. First, we should learn a dialectical view of the internship positions, and should be learning and training as a primary objective. Before the internship, we should do suffer psychological preparation and physical preparation, no matter what departments should be assigned to law-abiding hard to learn, even if they cannot accept the position but also efforts to adapt to, and understand their current status. Second, schools should pay more attention to the psychological problems of interns. Schools should guide interns in the right state of mind to deal with the relationship with social workers.
